1: Q. When are tryouts?

A. Tryouts for the start of a seasonal year are conducted at Kinder Park in mid-June, the exact date depending on when all leagues have completed their regular seasons, and are set in April. For more information, see the Tryouts link on the web site.

Tryouts for the spring season are determined by the needs of the individual team. To see what openings exist or a given team, see that team’s team web site, check that team’s league’s Tryouts link, or contact the coach or manager via our Contact List.

2: Q. What is the playing season?

A. The playing season is defined as the period of time starting 6 weeks before the first regular season game for that team’s league through the completion of that team’s regular season. In the case of a team that plays in more that one league simultaneously, the definition is from the earliest start to the latest finish.

Select teams (except for those in the AAYSL) are required by MSYSA to compete both in the fall and spring.

3: Q. What are the typical costs of playing select?

A. There is the registration fee which is $100 per season, plus a once-a-year family fee of $50. This covers all league, field, and ref expenses for games and training sessions, as well as a starter set of balls, cones, training vests and similar equipment. There is a uniform kit expense of about $135 which includes home and away, numbered, branded jerseys, shorts, and home and away socks. These typically last about 2 years. Additional team expenses may include additional balls, training aids like field discs or cones, a first aid kit, coolers, etc. Additional personal expenses include warm-up suits, equipment bags, and similar equipment and aids.

Most Select teams play one or more tournaments a season. Typical tournament fees are in the $500-$600 range and are equally borne by each player. You should check with the coaches of the team to determine how many tournaments the team is expecting to play.

A player also should consider travel, lodging and daily incidental expenses, for regular season games as well as tournaments. Tournaments sometimes offer special lodging rates.

4: Q. My child has special needs (i.e. asthma, allergies, etc.), can that be accommodated?

A. Green Hornets makes every attempt to accommodate children with specific health concerns. Each parent needs to address special needs with their family physician prior to engaging in organized sports. Specific health issues should be discussed with the head coach of the team. Depending on the severity of the condition, constant parent presence on the field during practices and games may be required. Green Hornets coaches are not trained to provide medical assistance and are not authorized to provide medical assistance except in the case of life-threatening injuries.
