WELCOME TO
THE GIRLS’ BASKETBALL PROGRAM

Welcome to the Greater Severna Park Athletic Association “Green Hornets” Girls’ Basketball program website. Our program is run by an all-volunteer force, so we greatly appreciate their involvement and your support in making the program a success. We try our best to continually improve the program. But most of the good ideas come from the participants in the program, so we are open and receptive to your input and ideas. Please feel free to email your thoughts and ideas to the Commissioner, Bill Giblin at giblinb@verizon.net.

We try very hard to balance the sometimes conflicting goals of developing the most talented players for the local high school programs while including as many girls as possible for their recreational needs. Obtaining gym space in fulfillment of these goals remains our biggest challenge, but we will continue to seek quality options in this area. Our excellent working relationship with the Anne Arundel County Department of Parks and Recreation helps keep us going.

To help alleviate some of the administrative burden on our all volunteer force, we will be looking to increase the use of this website for conducting the business of the program. We encourage you to check back here often for the latest program information, and we thank you for your support.

ABOUT THE PROGRAM: The Girls Basketball program will be run entirely during the winter season for the third year. We will continue to field our competitive “select” county teams that will play in the Anne Arundel County Saturday league as well as playing in the competitive Arbutus league on Sundays. Our club league teams will play other Green Hornet teams in their respective age groups throughout the winter.

No specialized equipment or training is needed to participate in the Green Hornet Girls’ Basketball program; just a pair of basketball shoes, practice attire and the desire to learn and have FUN.

"Team Monitors": Team monitors is a program newly modified for this upcoming winter season. In the past our use of county gym space has been jeopardized when unsupervised players or siblings have caused damage to the facilities. We have tried various programs to address this issue in the past with limited success. Effective starting with the 2006-2007 season, the following rules must be adhered to by all participants in the Green Hornets Girls’ Basketball program or they will risk dismissal from the program:

It will be incumbent upon the players, the coaches and the players’ parents to work together to make sure that the facilities are left in better condition than when they arrived and that no “horseplay” occurs. It is imperative that parents not bring siblings to games or practices if they cannot be supervised at all times during their stay in the facility.

Girls Club Basketball: The Girls Club Basketball program exists to provide local community youth between the ages of 8 and 14 an opportunity to develop an appreciation of sportsmanship in a team environment while getting exercise and developing basic basketball skills. The club program has two competitive leagues divided by age groups. The basketball program determines age based on the age of the player as of September 1st.

We accommodate over 200 girls in our program. All players are evaluated and teams are then formed in an attempt to form equally competitive teams. These teams typically play an 8-10 game schedule with a post season tournament and practice twice a week.

Girls “Select” County Basketball: The Girls’ “Select” County Basketball program is composed of skilled and experienced players. Selection to the team is by try-out only. While there may be more than one team in each age group, the precise number depends upon gym availability and adequate coaching resources.

This program is more intense than the club program with more practices and more competitive games.

If you register your child for winter select basketball, but she does not make the team, you can have your account credited, your money refunded or you will be placed for evaluation in our club program.

AGE RANGE: Players range in age from 8 to 14 years old.

*(A 14 year old can play as long as they are not in high school and sign a waiver to be provided by Anne Arundel Coutny Parks and Recreation.)

COST: Club basketball $90.00 / Select (County) basketball $150.00.

SEASON: The season for Girls basketball runs from November to early March.
