GREEN HORNETS FOOTBALL: LEAGUE STRUCTURE - AGE/WEIGHT

The League AAYFA:

  • The Green Hornets football program is a member of the Anne Arundel Youth Football Association (AAYFA). The AAYFA has 22 organizations as members and fields around 200 teams.
  • Therefore, our program operates and abides by all rules, guidelines and standards set forth by the AAYFA and Anne Arundel County Parks and Recreation.
  • Last year the Green Hornets had fourteen football teams within the AAYFA. Approximately 300 children, in eight weight classes.
Age of Participation:

Tackle football is open to boys and girls from 6 to 15 years old.

Birth Certificates:

All players must provide a copy of their birth certificate. Please turn in at equipment handout. Dates to be determined.

Birth date Cutoff is SEPTEMBER 1ST of each year
This date coincides with Anne Arundel County’s age and cutoff guidelines for children entering grade school as of 2005. This is enforced to try to keep children of the same grade together.

As has always been Hornets Policy, Players will be placed on correct teams by age group.

Players will only play up if weight is an issue. There is not a choice.

Weight/Age Divisions:
The 2008 age and weight divisions are listed below.

  • If a player exceeds the weight listed for their specific age group, they are eligible to play up a maximum of 2 weight classes.
  • For example a player, that by age, should play for the 100lb level can play up to the 125 lb level if weight necessitates it, but not further.

Fresh/Soph League: 09/01/1993—08/31/1994

This league would permit any freshman and/or sophomores that do not turn 16 in 2008, and meet the same eligibility requirements as would be needed to play for the high school to play for the Green Hornets.

There is no weight restriction.

Please see the new “FRESH/SOPH LEAGUE” link listed above for details.

Minimum Play Rule:
The Anne Arundel County Recreation Department mandates a minimum play rule as follows

  • Half game play requirement for the 70 lb
  • 10 play minimum for all other weight specific levels. (80,90,100,110,125,135)
  • No play minimum on unlimited weight levels. (12U, 13U & Fresh/Soph)
This means that in some games players may only play the minimum plays per game, including special teams

Weigh -In:

  • ALL PLAYERS ARE REQUIRED TO ATTEND AND PASS A WEIGH IN OR THEY CANNOT PLAY.
  • Players will weigh-in three weeks before the first game. Currently scheduled August 2nd.
  • If the child does not make weight for the roster assigned to, Coaches, Player and Parent have only 48hrs to decide if the player will attempt to make weight again or be moved up to the next weight class. Once the initial weigh in and 48 hours have passed, no changes can be made, so if the child does not make weight he cannot play at all.
  • Players will be given a second opportunity to make weight at a county make-up weigh-in, date TBD.
  • There will be a third “LATE” weigh in the first week of the season. If the player opts to attempt weigh in at the “Late” weigh in, he will miss the first 2 regular season games and if he fails, he is not eligible to play at all.
Season Weight Gain & Playoffs
