The Select (County) program is a very competitive program with the teams playing in various Anne Arundel County leagues. Many select teams also participate in a second league or enter various tournaments. The County maintains a web site with schedules and results for the teams in their leagues which can be visited by clicking here. Our goal is to provide Select opportunities for boys that want to play basketball year round, as well as for ones that want to play at the higher levels of the Select Program but only during the traditional basketball season.
The Select Program usually consists of one 8-year old team, three or more 9/10-year old teams, three or more 11/12-year old teams, and up to two 13-year old teams. These teams are normally selected for each individual age (i.e., an 8 Year Old Team, 9 Year Old Teams, 10 Year Old Teams, etc., up through 8th grade). Depending on the number of participants, the third team for the 9/10 and 11/12 year old divisions could be a mix of those respective age groups for the past two seasons.
To compete in the Select program, a boy must sign up for the Select program (2008 fee is $150), tryout, and be selected. Those players not chosen for a Select team will automatically be entered into the Club league, and any difference in fees will be refunded or credited to their account with G.S.P.A.A. Because of limitations in the availability of gym space, no select team playing in the county league during the winter basketball season can have a disproportionate number of players from outside of the Severna Park High School feeder system, or less than 70% of its players residing in Anne Arundel County.
Some of the select teams also choose to play in other leagues like the Harundale Youth Sports league, the Sunday Arbutus league, the Baltimore Beltway league, the Greater Glen Burnie league, or in local and regional tournaments. There are also opportunities for teams or groups of individuals to continue to play basketball after the winter season in AAU (Spring-Summer), pick up leagues offered at the Severna Park Community Center and Maryland Sportsplex (Spring, Summer, Fall), Green Hornets Basketball Clinics (Fall) or other programs.
