HISTORY

In 1949, Harvey Garcelon and Paul Bigby started the first Green Hornet teams with a few boys and whatever money they had in their pockets. The Green Hornet budget was whatever families could afford. Those first few years the boys played wherever they could find space. Any vacant lot or farm field became a make-shift ball field. In order to find opponents, teams traveled throughout eastern Maryland.

As the years passed, more sports were added and more children participated. As interest grew, so did the organization. Eventually the organization was incorporated as the Greater Severna Park Athletic Association, Inc.

Mr. Garcelon served the Severna Park community by helping to inspire others to share his vision for thirty-five years. His tenacity led to the development of Kinder Farm Park as a recreational site for Green Hornet sports. He helped design the playing fields and facilities at the county park. He was honored by the organization by naming the main building the "Harvey Garcelon Pavilion," and he was saluted with speeches and telegrams from around the world at the dedication of the park in 1983. Harvey Garcelon passed away in 1999 at the age of 86, but his memory and vision lives on.
